The BMW B58 3.0L Turbo Engine

The BMW B58B30 is a 3.0-litre twin-scroll single turbocharged inline-six that represents the evolution of BMW's legendary straight-six engine lineage. Launched in 2015 as the successor to the N55, the B58 introduced a closed-deck aluminium block, integrated exhaust manifold (for faster turbo spool), and — in Gen2 form — both direct and port injection for cleaner combustion and better fuel flexibility.

Factory output ranges from 326hp / 450nm (340i / M140i) to 382hp / 500nm (M340i xDrive / M440i). The B58 Gen2 (2018+) is the preferred variant for tuning, with a stronger closed-deck block and dual injection supporting higher boost levels.

With a Stage 1 ECU remap, the B58 reliably delivers 400–430hp and 575–580nm — a massive jump that transforms the driving experience. The B58 is widely regarded as the best BMW inline-6 ever made for both daily driving and performance applications.

B58B30 Supporting Modifications

Stage 2 Essentials

  • Catless / High-Flow Downpipe — The biggest hardware upgrade for the B58. Removes the close-coupled catalytic converter from the integrated exhaust manifold. Essential for Stage 2 power.
  • Performance Intake — An AFE dry drop-in filter or cold air intake improves airflow. Combined with an upgraded charge pipe on Gen1 cars for maximum reliability.

Stage 2+ & Beyond

  • Upgraded Intercooler — Recommended for Stage 2+ and above. A VRSF or equivalent FMIC keeps intake temps consistent during high-boost pulls, especially in Auckland's summer humidity.
  • Upgraded Turbo — The stock B58 turbo tops out around 480–500hp. Hybrid turbos (PureTurbos, Vargas VTT) push 550–650hp. Single turbo conversions for 700hp+ builds.
  • Methanol Injection / E85 — The B58 Gen2's port injection makes ethanol blends easier to run. WMI (water-methanol injection) is another option for charge cooling and effective octane increase.
  • xHP Transmission Tune — Essential for ZF 8HP-equipped B58 cars. Higher torque limits, faster shifts, and launch control to match the ECU tune.

Coolant Loss / Expansion Tank

B58 engines can develop coolant loss issues, often from the expansion tank or coolant hoses. We check the cooling system thoroughly during pre-tune diagnostics — proper cooling is critical for sustained high-boost operation.

Charge Pipe (Gen1)

Gen1 B58 cars (340i, M140i, M240i) have a plastic charge pipe that can crack under increased boost. Aluminium replacement is recommended before any Stage 1+ tune. Gen2 cars have an improved design but still benefit from an upgrade.

The B58's integrated exhaust manifold runs hotter than traditional setups. On tuned cars, an upgraded intercooler is important to manage intake temperatures, especially in Auckland's summer humidity.

Early Gen1 B58 engines had occasional timing chain stretch reports. BMW issued a service bulletin. We check chain stretch during diagnostics. Gen2 engines have an improved chain design.

Some early Gen1 B58 engines exhibit higher oil consumption than expected. We monitor oil levels and check for PCV issues before tuning.

How much power can a B58 make with a Stage 1 tune?

A stock-hardware B58 typically makes 400–430hp and 575–580nm with a Stage 1 ECU remap. Gen2 models (M340i, M440i) start higher and reach similar peak figures, meaning the relative gain is slightly smaller but the absolute power is exceptional.

What's the difference between B58 Gen1 and Gen2?

Gen1 (2015–2018, found in 340i/M140i/M240i) uses direct injection only and an open-deck block. Gen2 (2018+, found in M340i/M440i/Supra) adds port injection, has a stronger closed-deck block, and revised turbo plumbing. Gen2 generally supports higher power levels on stock internals.

Is the Toyota Supra A90 the same engine?

Yes — the A90 Supra uses the B58B30 Gen2 engine, identical to the one in the M340i and M440i. All MHD and custom tuning applies equally. The Supra's lighter weight means the same tune feels even more dramatic.

Is MHD compatible with the B58?

Yes. MHD Flasher fully supports the B58 platform across Gen1 and Gen2. EuroLab uses MHD as the flashing platform — the vessel that loads our custom-developed calibrations onto your ECU. Our custom tunes are built specifically for NZ 98 RON fuel and local conditions.

What's the difference between an OTS tune and a custom dyno tune?

An OTS tune uses pre-calibrated maps developed overseas for US/EU fuel and climate. A custom dyno tune is developed by EuroLab in-house on our Mainline hub dynamometer — optimised for your specific engine, modifications, and New Zealand's 98 RON fuel. Custom tunes extract more power because they're calibrated for exactly what your engine is running on.

Do I need an intercooler upgrade for Stage 1?

Not required, but highly recommended — especially in Auckland. The stock B58 intercooler is adequate for stock power but heat-soaks under repeated high-boost pulls. A VRSF or equivalent front-mount intercooler ensures consistent power delivery.

How long does a B58 tune take?

Every vehicle starts with a 2-hour health check and diagnostic. An MHD OTS flash then takes approximately 1 hour. A custom dyno tune is a 2–3 day process — baseline pulls, full calibration development on the hub dyno, validation runs, road testing, and final verification.
