You just spent $80,000 on a European car with every safety feature money can buy. Then you put the cheapest tyres you could find on it.
I see this all the time. Customers bring in BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Porsches, cars engineered to the highest standard, and they’re rolling on tyres that cost less than a tank of fuel. The car has adaptive suspension, carbon ceramic brakes, stability control systems that took engineers years to develop. And all of that technology is trying to work through four patches of rubber the size of your palm.
Your tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road. Everything else, every dollar you spent, every safety system, every piece of engineering, all of it depends on those four contact patches doing their job.
The Real Cost of Cheap Tyres
Here’s the maths that nobody does at the tyre shop.
You buy a budget tyre for $250. It lasts 10,000 kms. That’s 2.5 cents per kilometre.
You buy a premium tyre for $400. It lasts 30,000 kms. That’s 1.3 cents per kilometre.
The “expensive” tyre costs half as much to run. You saved nothing. You paid more per kilometre, got a worse ride, and put your family at risk doing it.
Those are real numbers from our workshop, not made up to prove a point. The cheap tyres that come through our doors regularly don’t last half as long as the premium ones on the same car, driven the same way. Independent testing from TyreReviews confirms the trend. Even in controlled conditions, premium tyres outlast budget options, and the worst budget tyres wear out dramatically faster than the average. On top of that, premium tyres have lower rolling resistance, which means better fuel economy over the life of the tyre. So you’re paying more per kilometre AND burning more fuel.
It doesn’t make sense to buy the inferior tyre.
What Cheap Tyres Actually Feel Like
People think tyres are tyres. Black and round, they all do the same job. That’s wrong.
Put a set of budget tyres on your car and you’ll notice it immediately. They’re noisy. Not a little bit, properly noisy. Road roar that you never had before, droning at highway speeds, a cabin that suddenly feels less refined. That $80,000 car with double glazed windows and sound deadening everywhere, and now it sounds like you’re driving a van because you cheaped out on four pieces of rubber.
They ride harder. Budget compounds are stiffer because they don’t have the R&D behind them to engineer a compound that’s soft enough to absorb bumps but firm enough to hold shape at speed. So every imperfection in the road comes through. That comfortable European ride you paid for? Gone.
Then there’s the road steer. Cheap tyres wander. You’re constantly making micro corrections on the motorway because the tyre isn’t tracking straight. It’s not your alignment. It’s not your suspension. It’s the tyre. The carcass construction is inconsistent, the belts aren’t as precise, and the tyre pulls wherever it wants.
Stopping Distance: Where It Gets Dangerous
Everything I’ve said so far is about comfort and money. This is about whether you hit the car in front of you.
Independent testing shows that in wet conditions, a premium tyre like a Continental will stop a car over 7 metres shorter than the best budget tyre from 80 km/h. Against the worst budget tyre? Over 14 metres shorter.
Think about that. 14 metres is three car lengths. That’s the difference between stopping safely and rear-ending someone at a set of lights in the rain. That’s the difference between your kids being fine in the back seat and an ACC claim.
In the dry it’s closer, but there’s still a significant gap. And in New Zealand, how many days a year do you drive in the wet? Auckland alone gets over 120 days of rain a year. You’re not driving in a test lab. You’re driving on Tamaki Drive in a southerly with standing water on the road.
Your ABS, your traction control, your stability management, all of those systems are only as good as the grip your tyres provide. Put cheap tyres on a car with $10,000 worth of safety tech and you’ve just made all of it worse.
Sidewall Bubbles and Blowouts
This is the one that really annoys me.
Budget tyres develop sidewall bubbles at a rate that premium tyres simply don’t. A bubble on a sidewall means the internal structure of the tyre has failed. The plies have separated, and air pressure is pushing out against the rubber. That tyre is done. It’s a blowout waiting to happen.
Yes, any tyre can get a bubble from hitting a pothole hard enough. But cheap tyres form them from impacts that a premium tyre would shrug off. The carcass construction isn’t as robust, the materials aren’t as good, and the quality control isn’t there. I’ve seen budget tyres come in with sidewall damage after hitting speed bumps that a Michelin or Continental would have handled without issue.
A blowout at 100 km/h on the motorway isn’t an inconvenience. It’s a potential fatality.
The Brands That Get It Right
I’m not telling you to buy the most expensive tyre on the market. I’m telling you to buy from manufacturers who spend billions on research and development, who have motorsport programmes pushing the limits of what rubber can do, and who build tyres that are engineered rather than just manufactured.
Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear. These aren’t premium because of marketing. They’re premium because they employ thousands of engineers, run millions of kilometres of testing, and use compounds and construction methods that budget manufacturers can’t match.
There are also solid mid-range options. Hankook, Kumho, Falken, Yokohama. Good tyres, proper engineering, not the cheapest and not the most expensive. If a full set of Michelins doesn’t fit the budget, these are brands you can trust.
What I wouldn’t touch? The brands you’ve never heard of. The ones being sold online for $100 per tyre in a size that should cost $300. If a deal looks too good to be true, it is.
Tyres, Wheels, and Suspension: The Holy Trinity
Your tyres, your wheels, and your suspension are the three things keeping your car on the road. That’s it. Every force, every bump, every corner, every emergency stop goes through those three systems.
You wouldn’t put the cheapest brake pads on your car and hope for the best. You wouldn’t fill your engine with the cheapest oil and expect it to last. So why would you put the cheapest rubber between your car and the road?
These are not the parts you cheapen on. Not on any car, but especially not on a performance vehicle that’s capable of speeds where tyre failure isn’t just expensive, it’s life threatening.
What price do you put on your safety? On your family’s safety? Because that’s the calculation you’re actually making when you choose the $250 tyre over the $400 one. You’re not saving $150. You’re gambling that the inferior tyre won’t let you down when it matters most.

When someone asks me to fit budget tyres, I tell them exactly what I’ve written here. Some listen. Some don’t. That’s their choice.
But I won’t fit a tyre I wouldn’t put on my own car. If you bring me a tyre that I know is going to give you a worse ride, wear out in 10,000 kms, and potentially put you at risk in the wet, I’m going to tell you. That’s my job.
