ECU Unlocking in Auckland - Done In-House, Usually Same Day
EuroLab is an independent European specialist workshop in East Tamaki, Auckland that unlocks factory-locked engine ECUs on our own bench. Most workshops in New Zealand courier your ECU overseas and you wait one to three weeks. Ours never leaves Auckland.
What a locked ECU actually means
From roughly mid-2020, most European manufacturers started shipping engine control units with the read and write functions locked at the factory. Nothing is wrong with your car - the calibration simply cannot be read or written until the unit is unlocked. Until that happens, no tuner in the world can flash it, and no MHD, bootmod3 or custom file will load.
Unlocking is a one-time procedure. Once it is done, your car can be tuned, re-tuned, returned to stock and updated for as long as you own it. It is a step on the way to a tune, not a product in itself - which is why we tell you what your car needs before you pay for anything.
The short version
What it costs
All prices incl. GST. We confirm the exact ECU fitted to your car before you pay - coverage depends on the control unit, not the badge on the boot.
ECU Unlock Pricing
We publish these prices. Most workshops will not - if you are comparing, ask what the total is including freight and how many days the car is off the road.
Which cars we unlock
Coverage is per control unit, so this list is a guide - send us your year, model and engine and we will confirm before you commit.
How we do it
BMW - the case stays sealed
Your BMW, Mini, Alpina or Supra ECU is read and unlocked on our bench with the housing closed. Nothing is cut, drilled or soldered, and the unit goes back exactly as it came out.
Other brands - opened and resealed by us
Some control units have to be opened to gain access. Nothing is soldered and no components are removed. We close and reseal the unit ourselves, then test it before it goes back in the car.
Your original file is archived
A full original read is taken and kept on file before anything is written, so your car can always be returned to factory calibration.
Your ECU never leaves Auckland
Unlocked in East Tamaki, on our own equipment, usually the same day. No international freight, no tracking numbers, no three-week wait.
Two ways to do it
Mail in your ECU
Remove the ECU yourself and courier it to EuroLab, 27a Neilpark Drive, East Tamaki, Auckland 2013. We unlock it and send it straight back, usually the same day it lands.
Drop the car off
Leave the car with us and we remove, unlock and refit the ECU for you. Same price either way. Enter your registration when you order so we can confirm your exact ECU before you send anything.
Not sure what your car needs? Send us your year, model and engine and we will check the lock status for you at no charge - before you spend anything on a tune.

Where can I get an ECU unlocked in Auckland?
EuroLab unlocks factory-locked ECUs in-house at 27a Neilpark Drive, East Tamaki, Auckland. We are a European specialist workshop with our own unlocking equipment and a Mainline hub dynamometer, so the unlock, the tune and the aftercare all happen in one building. Most cars are done the same day and your ECU does not leave Auckland.
How much does an ECU unlock cost in New Zealand?
At EuroLab, $750 incl. GST for BMW, Mini, Alpina and Toyota Supra A90 built June 2020 on, $500 for pre-June-2020 BMW and Supra locked by a dealer software update, $750 for Audi and Volkswagen, $1,500 for Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Land Rover, Jaguar and most other brands, and $2,800 for the BMW S68. Overseas workshops commonly charge the equivalent of NZ$1,750 to NZ$2,850 for the same job.
Why does my 2021 BMW need an ECU unlock before tuning?
BMW began locking the DME from around mid-2020. The tuning software cannot read or write the calibration until the unit is unlocked, so MHD, bootmod3 and custom files will not load on a locked car. Once it is unlocked, the car can be tuned, re-tuned and returned to stock for as long as you own it.
Does the ECU have to be opened?
Not on BMW, Mini, Alpina or Supra - those are done on the bench with the housing sealed. Nothing is cut, drilled or soldered. Some other manufacturers' control units do have to be opened to gain access; we open, close and reseal them ourselves, without soldering or removing components, and test the unit before refitting it.
How long does it take and will I lose my car for weeks?
Usually the same day. Because we unlock in-house in East Tamaki there is no international freight - which is what turns this job into a one to three week wait when a workshop has to send the unit to Europe or the United States.
Can the car go back to standard afterwards?
Yes. We take a full original read and archive it before anything is written, so your factory calibration can always be restored.
Do you unlock Mercedes-AMG V8 models?
No. We unlock the mainstream Mercedes-Benz four and six cylinder petrol and diesel control units (Bosch MD1CP001 and MG1CP002). The AMG V8s use a different unit that we cannot unlock in-house, and we would rather tell you that up front than take the booking.
Do you unlock ECUs for other workshops?
Yes. If you are a workshop or tuner with a locked unit, call us on 09 309 0862 - we handle trade work and can usually turn it around the same day.
