M157 Tuning FAQs

How much power can a tuned M157 make?

With a custom dyno tune, the M157 typically produces 650-720hp at Stage 1 (software only). Stage 2 with bolt-ons pushes to 750-850hp. With upgraded turbos and supporting hardware, 900-1,100+hp is achievable. All figures SAE J1349-corrected on our Mainline CCS3600 hub dyno.

What's the difference between M157 and M278?

The M278 is Mercedes' non-AMG 4.7L bi-turbo V8 (found in S500, E500, etc). The M157 is the AMG hand-built version - 5.5L displacement, higher-flow heads, stronger internals, and significantly more tuning headroom. They share some architecture but the M157 is purpose-built for performance.

Is the M157 reliable after tuning?

The M157 is one of the more robust AMG engines for tuning. Factory forged internals (especially on S models) handle Stage 1 and Stage 2 comfortably. The most common maintenance items are the head bolt stretch issue (addressed with updated torque specs) and turbo oil line seals.

How much does it cost to tune an M157 in Auckland?

Should I tune the transmission as well?

Recommended. TCU tuning for the MCT 7-speed transmission unlocks faster shift speeds, higher torque limits, and improved shift logic. Combined with the ECU tune, this transforms the driving experience - especially the shift feel and launch control behaviour.

M157 vs M177 - which is better for tuning?

Both are excellent platforms. The M157's larger 5.5L displacement gives it an advantage in raw power potential per boost level, while the M177's newer architecture offers better efficiency and refinement. Both comfortably reach 700+hp with a quality custom tune.
