Why the M278?

  • The M278 is one of Mercedes' most underrated tuning platforms - massive displacement plus factory twin turbos means enormous headroom
  • Stage 1 gains of 100-120hp are typical - one of the biggest percentage gains of any Mercedes engine from software alone
  • Shares turbo architecture with the M157 AMG engine - proven aftermarket turbo upgrade path available
  • Found in luxury models (S-Class, GL, SL) where the refined power delivery and torque curve make tuning especially rewarding

How It Works - Our Tuning Process

Every EuroLab custom tune follows the same rigorous 4-step process.

🔍

1. Consultation & Health Check

We inspect your vehicle, check for fault codes, and discuss your goals. No tuning happens on a car with underlying issues.

📈

2. Baseline Dyno Run

Your car goes on our Mainline CCS3600 hub dynamometer for baseline power and torque measurements - SAE J1349-corrected for honest, repeatable numbers.

🔧

3. Custom Calibration

We develop your tune file in-house, making iterative adjustments on the dyno. Fuel maps, boost targets, ignition timing - all calibrated for your specific car, mods, and NZ 98 RON fuel.

4. Final Validation & Handover

Final power pulls to confirm gains, data review with you, and a road test. You leave with your dyno sheet and a car that performs exactly as promised.

M278 Tuning FAQs

How much power can a tuned M278 make?

With a custom dyno tune, the M278 typically produces 520-570hp at Stage 1 (software only) - that's 100-120hp over stock. Stage 2 with bolt-ons pushes to 600-680hp. With upgraded turbos, 750-900+hp is achievable. All figures SAE J1349-corrected on our Mainline CCS3600 hub dyno.

How much does it cost to tune an M278 in Auckland?

EuroLab's custom dyno tune is $2,500 incl. GST. This includes a baseline dyno run, custom calibration for your specific car, and final validation pulls - calibrated for NZ 98 RON fuel and local conditions.

What's the difference between M278 and M157?

The M278 is Mercedes' non-AMG 4.7L bi-turbo V8 found in luxury models (E500, S500, etc). The M157 is AMG's hand-built 5.5L version with higher-flow heads, stronger internals, and more factory power. However, the M278 still responds extremely well to tuning and shares similar turbo architecture.

Is the M278 reliable after tuning?

The M278 is a robust engine designed for high-torque luxury applications. Stage 1 is very safe on factory hardware. The most common maintenance items are the timing chain tensioners (should be checked before tuning high-mileage examples) and turbo oil feed lines.

Can a tuned E500 match an E63?

A Stage 1 E500 at 520-570hp gets close to a base E63 (518hp). Stage 2 puts it ahead. You won't get the AMG exhaust note or suspension, but the straight-line performance becomes very competitive - especially impressive from a luxury cruiser.

Does tuning affect the air suspension?

ECU tuning does not affect the air suspension (AIRMATIC) system. The suspension is controlled by a separate module. However, the increased torque may cause more squat under hard acceleration - the air suspension compensates for this automatically.
