Why the OM656?

  • The OM656 is Mercedes' flagship diesel - a 3.0L inline-six with compound turbocharging that delivers V8-like torque with diesel efficiency
  • Factory torque figures of 700-750Nm are already impressive - a Stage 1 tune pushes past 820Nm, rivalling large petrol V8s for sheer pulling power
  • The inline-six configuration is inherently smooth - combined with compound turbocharging, the power delivery is effortless and refined
  • Ideal for heavy vehicles (S-Class, GLE, GLS, G-Class) where the torque transforms the driving experience without sacrificing the refined character

How It Works - Our Tuning Process

Every EuroLab custom tune follows the same rigorous 4-step process.

🔍

1. Consultation & Health Check

We inspect your vehicle, check for fault codes, and discuss your goals. No tuning happens on a car with underlying issues.

📈

2. Baseline Dyno Run

Your car goes on our Mainline CCS3600 hub dynamometer for baseline power and torque measurements - SAE J1349-corrected for honest, repeatable numbers.

🔧

3. Custom Calibration

We develop your tune file in-house, making iterative adjustments on the dyno. Fuel maps, boost targets, ignition timing - all calibrated for your specific vehicle and NZ diesel fuel.

4. Final Validation & Handover

Final power pulls to confirm gains, data review with you, and a road test. You leave with your dyno sheet and a car that performs exactly as promised.

OM656 Tuning FAQs

How much power can a tuned OM656 make?

With a custom dyno tune, the OM656 typically produces 370-420hp at Stage 1 (software only) with 820-900Nm of torque. Stage 2 pushes to 420-470hp. With upgraded turbos, 500-550+hp is achievable. All figures SAE J1349-corrected on our Mainline CCS3600 hub dyno.

How much does it cost to tune an OM656 in Auckland?

EuroLab's custom dyno tune is $2,500 incl. GST. This includes a baseline dyno run, custom calibration for your specific car, and final validation pulls - calibrated for NZ diesel fuel specifications.

What makes the OM656 different from the OM642?

The OM656 is a complete clean-sheet design. It's an inline-six (vs V6), uses compound turbocharging (sequential turbos for better response), has an aluminium block with steel liners, and CAMTRONIC variable valve lift. It's significantly more powerful, efficient, and refined than the OM642.

Is the OM656 reliable after tuning?

The OM656 is built to handle enormous torque loads from the factory. The compound turbo system and strong internals give it excellent headroom for Stage 1 tuning. As a newer engine, long-term tuning data is still building, but early results are very positive.

Can a tuned E400d match an E63 for real-world speed?

Not in outright acceleration - the E63's 612hp petrol V8 has a significant advantage. But a tuned E400d with 820+Nm of torque from 1,200rpm delivers devastating in-gear overtaking performance. In real-world driving (motorway merges, hill climbs, towing), the torque advantage is enormous.

Does the compound turbo system affect tuning?

The compound (sequential) turbo system actually makes the OM656 an excellent tuning platform. The small turbo provides instant response, while the larger turbo delivers high-end power. ECU calibration can optimise the handover point and boost targets for both turbos independently.
