The BMW N55 Twin-Scroll Turbo Engine
The BMW N55B30 is a 3.0-litre twin-scroll single turbocharged inline-six that succeeded the N54 in 2010. BMW replaced the N54's twin turbos with a single, larger BorgWarner twin-scroll unit — delivering better throttle response, smoother power delivery, and significantly improved reliability. The N55 was BMW's workhorse performance engine across the entire F-series lineup.
Factory output ranges from 306hp / 400nm (standard F30 335i) to 326hp / 450nm (M135i/M235i with Performance Power Kit). With a Stage 1 ECU remap, the N55 reliably delivers 360–380hp and 520nm — a significant jump from factory figures.
While the N55 uses an aluminium block (vs the N54's cast iron), the bottom end is still robust enough for 450–500hp on stock internals with proper tuning. The single turbo layout also means fewer failure points and lower maintenance costs compared to the N54.

MHD Flasher is the gold standard for BMW inline-6 tuning. MHD provides the platform and OBD-port interface for flashing ECU calibrations. It comes with pre-calibrated OTS maps that deliver immediate, reliable power gains.

For customers who want the absolute maximum from their N55B30, we offer custom dyno calibration on our Mainline CCS3600 hub-coupled chassis dynamometer. EuroLab develops its own proprietary calibration files — we use MHD as the flashing platform to load our custom maps, but the tune itself is built entirely in-house, live on the hub dyno.

N55B30 Supporting Modifications
Stage 2 Essentials
- Catless / High-Flow Downpipe — The single biggest hardware upgrade for the N55. Removes the restrictive catalytic converter and dramatically reduces exhaust backpressure. Essential for Stage 2 power levels.
- Upgraded Intercooler — The stock N55 intercooler heat-soaks under sustained load. A VRSF or equivalent front-mount intercooler maintains consistent intake temperatures for repeatable power — especially important in Auckland's climate.
- Performance Intake / Charge Pipe — An aluminium charge pipe is mandatory (the stock plastic one WILL fail). Combined with an AFE dry drop-in filter for improved airflow — proven, cost-effective gains.
Stage 2+ & Beyond
- Upgraded Turbo — The stock N55 twin-scroll turbo tops out around 420–450hp. Options include hybrid turbos (Vargas VTT, Pure) for 500–600hp or single turbo conversions for 600hp+ builds.
- Upgraded Fuel System — Port injection kits (like the BMS PI kit) and upgraded LPFP support ethanol fuelling and higher boost setups beyond what the stock direct injection system can deliver.
- xHP Transmission Tune — If your N55 has the ZF 8HP automatic, an xHP transmission flash is essential to match the ECU tune — higher torque limits, faster shifts, launch control.

Valve Cover & Oil Filter Housing Gasket
The N55 shares the N54's tendency for oil leaks at the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. These are age-related wear items, typically appearing at 80,000–120,000km. We address these before any tuning work.

Charge Pipe Cracking
Like the N54, the stock plastic charge pipe is the weakest link on a tuned N55. It will crack under increased boost pressure. An aluminium replacement is essential for any Stage 1+ tune — we won't tune without one.

Water Pump / Thermostat
The electric water pump is a known failure point across all N5x engines. Symptoms: overheating warnings, erratic temperature. We recommend proactive replacement around 80,000km, especially before tuning.

VANOS Solenoids
The N55's VANOS solenoids can develop issues causing rough idle and reduced performance. We check VANOS operation during our pre-tune diagnostic and replace if necessary.

Boost Leaks
Aged boost hoses and the charge pipe coupling can develop leaks over time. We pressure-test the entire charge system before tuning to ensure the engine sees full boost.

Crank Seal Guard — Recommended
While less critical than on the N54 (the N55 has a different belt routing), a crank seal guard is still a worthwhile preventative measure on any tuned BMW inline-6. Oil leaks can soak the serpentine belt, leading to catastrophic engine failure.

How much power can a stock N55 make with a Stage 1 tune?
A stock-hardware N55 typically makes 360–380hp and 520nm with a Stage 1 ECU remap. The M135i and M235i variants with higher stock power (320–326hp) see similar tuned figures since the ECU maps are calibrated for the hardware, not the stock power rating.
What's the difference between the N55 and N54?
The N55 replaced the N54's twin turbo setup with a single twin-scroll turbocharger. This improved reliability (fewer turbo-related failures), better throttle response, and smoother power delivery. The N55 uses an aluminium block (vs N54's cast iron) making it lighter but with a slightly lower absolute power ceiling. Both respond exceptionally well to tuning.
Is MHD compatible with the N55?
Yes. MHD Flasher fully supports the N55 platform with Stage 1 and Stage 2 OTS maps. EuroLab uses MHD as the flashing platform — the vessel that loads our custom-developed calibrations onto your ECU. OTS maps are developed overseas; our custom tunes are built for NZ 98 RON fuel and local conditions.
What's the difference between an OTS tune and a custom dyno tune?
An OTS tune uses pre-calibrated maps developed for the N55 platform — proven, reliable, quick to flash, but built for US/EU fuel and climate. A custom dyno tune is a completely separate calibration developed by EuroLab in-house, loaded via MHD, and built live on our Mainline hub dynamometer — optimised for your specific engine, modifications, and New Zealand's 98 RON fuel.
Do I need supporting modifications for Stage 1?
Stage 1 is software-only on stock hardware. However, we strongly recommend replacing the stock plastic charge pipe with an aluminium unit — it's a known failure point under increased boost. We check this during our pre-tune diagnostic.
Can I run E85 on the N55?
Yes, the N55 responds well to ethanol blends. E30–E50 blends mixed with 98 RON are popular for additional power gains. Full E85 requires upgraded fuel system components. We offer E85-specific custom dyno tunes.
Should I also tune my transmission?
If your N55 BMW has a ZF 8HP automatic, absolutely. An xHP transmission flash raises torque limits, delivers faster shifts, and adds launch control. We strongly recommend it alongside any ECU tune.
How long does an N55 tune take?
Every vehicle starts with a 2-hour health check and diagnostic — we never skip this step. An MHD OTS flash then takes approximately 1 hour. A custom dyno tune is a 2–3 day process — baseline pulls, full calibration development on the hub dyno, validation runs, road testing, and final verification.
