The BMW S55 Twin Turbo Engine

The BMW S55B30 is M Division's 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, purpose-built for the F80 M3 and F82 M4. While sharing the N55's basic architecture, the S55 is a fundamentally different engine — twin parallel turbochargers (not a single twin-scroll), forged crankshaft, lighter internals, cross-bank exhaust manifold, and significantly more aggressive factory calibration.

Factory output ranges from 431hp / 550nm (standard M3/M4) to 460hp / 600nm (M4 CS). The Competition models sit at 450hp / 550nm with revised suspension and exhaust. With a Stage 1 ECU remap, the S55 reliably delivers 500–530hp and 680nm — transforming an already fast car into something genuinely rapid.

The S55 is known for its exceptional tuning headroom. Stock internals (including the crank-hub assembly) can reliably handle Stage 2 power levels (520–560hp). With upgraded turbos and supporting modifications, 700hp+ builds are achievable on the S55 platform.

EuroLab develops its own proprietary calibration files — we use MHD as the flashing platform to load our custom maps, but the tune itself is built entirely in-house, live on the hub dyno.

S55B30 Supporting Modifications

Stage 2 Essentials

  • Catless / High-Flow Downpipes — The S55 has twin downpipes (one per turbo). High-flow or catless downpipes are the biggest single hardware upgrade — essential for Stage 2.
  • Upgraded Intercooler — A VRSF or equivalent FMIC is critical on the S55. The stock intercooler is adequate for factory power but heat-soaks rapidly on tuned cars, especially on track or in Auckland's humidity.
  • Charge Pipes — Upgraded aluminium charge pipes are mandatory. The stock plastic pipes will fail under increased boost — it's a question of when, not if.

Stage 2+ & Beyond

  • Crank Hub Fix — Pinning or upgraded crank bolt. Essential for Stage 2+ and mandatory for any track use. We recommend addressing this before pushing past 550hp.
  • Upgraded Turbos — Pure Stage 2, Vargas VTT, or similar hybrid turbos push the S55 to 650–800hp. Full-frame turbo kits available for 1000hp+ builds.
  • xHP / TCU Tune — The S55 M3/M4/M2 with DCT (GS7D36SG) benefit from a TCU tune for higher torque limits and optimised shift points. ZF 8HP-equipped cars use xHP.

Crank Hub / Crank Bolt

The S55's most discussed issue. The crank hub (the interface between crankshaft and timing components) can slip under extreme loads, causing catastrophic timing failure. On tuned S55 engines, a crank hub fix (pinning or upgraded bolt) is considered essential for any sustained high-power application. We recommend addressing this before Stage 2+.

Charge Pipe / Boost Pipe Failure

The stock plastic charge pipes are a weak point on tuned S55 engines. They will crack under increased boost pressure. Upgraded aluminium charge pipes are mandatory for any Stage 1+ tune.

Oil Cooler Lines

S55 oil cooler lines are prone to leaking at the crimp fittings. This is an age/mileage issue that should be addressed proactively, especially before increasing power output.

Rod Bearing Wear

The S55 uses plain rod bearings that can wear prematurely, especially under track use or high-power applications. We recommend rod bearing inspection at ~80,000km and proactive replacement on any car being tuned for sustained high power.

Valve Cover Oil Leaks

Like other BMW inline-6 engines, the S55 develops valve cover gasket leaks over time. We address these during pre-tune service.

BMW S55 Twin Turbo Tuning FAQs

How much power can a stock S55 make with a Stage 1 tune?

A stock-hardware S55 typically makes 500–530hp and 680nm with a Stage 1 ECU remap. The Competition and CS variants reach similar peak figures since the hardware is largely identical — the factory power difference is purely calibration.

What about the crank hub issue?

The S55 crank hub is a real concern on tuned engines. The hub connects the crankshaft to the timing chain sprocket, and under extreme torque loads it can slip — causing catastrophic timing failure. For Stage 1 daily driving, the risk is low. For Stage 2+ or any track use, we strongly recommend a crank hub fix (pinning). We can advise on the best approach for your build goals.

Is MHD compatible with the S55?

Yes. MHD Flasher fully supports the S55 platform. EuroLab uses MHD as the flashing platform — the vessel that loads our custom-developed calibrations onto your ECU. Our custom tunes are built specifically for NZ 98 RON fuel and local conditions.

What's the difference between an OTS tune and a custom dyno tune?

An OTS tune uses pre-calibrated maps developed overseas. A custom dyno tune is developed by EuroLab in-house on our Mainline hub dynamometer — optimised for your specific S55, its modifications, and New Zealand's 98 RON fuel. The S55 particularly benefits from custom tuning due to individual cylinder variation.

F80 M3 vs F82 M4 — any tuning difference?

The engine and ECU are identical. The only differences are body, weight distribution, and available options. Tuning results are the same between M3 and M4.

Should I upgrade rod bearings before tuning?

For Stage 1 on a well-maintained engine, rod bearings are typically fine. For Stage 2+ or track use, we recommend inspecting rod bearings and proactively replacing them with upgraded units. This is a relatively straightforward job we handle in-house.

How long does an S55 tune take?

Every vehicle starts with a 2-hour health check and diagnostic. An MHD OTS flash then takes approximately 1 hour. A custom dyno tune is a 2–3 day process — baseline pulls, full calibration development on the hub dyno, validation runs, road testing, and final verification.
