The BMW S58 Twin Turbo Engine

The BMW S58B30 is M Division's 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six and the most powerful production straight-six BMW has ever built. It combines the B58's proven closed-deck aluminium block with twin ball-bearing mono-scroll turbochargers, forged internals, and both direct and port injection — creating an engine with extraordinary tuning headroom.

Factory output ranges from 473hp / 550nm (standard G80 M3) to 510hp / 650nm (Competition variants). With a Stage 1 ECU remap, the S58 reliably delivers 600–650hp and 730–800nm on 93 octane equivalent — a staggering 100+ hp gain from software alone.

The S58's closed-deck block, forged internals, and dual injection system make it one of the most robust tuning platforms available. Stock turbos can support 650–680hp before running out of airflow. With upgraded turbos, 800hp+ is achievable. This engine is built to handle serious power.

S58B30 Supporting Modifications

Stage 2 Essentials

  • Catless / High-Flow Downpipes — Twin downpipes, one per turbo. High-flow or catless are the biggest single hardware upgrade for Stage 2 power.
  • Charge Pipes — Upgraded aluminium charge pipes. Mandatory on any tuned S58 — the stock plastic pipes are not rated for increased boost.

Stage 2+ & Beyond

  • Upgraded Intercooler — Recommended for Stage 2+ and above. A high-performance FMIC keeps intake temps consistent during sustained high-power runs, especially on track.
  • Upgraded Turbos — PureTurbos, Vargas VTT, or similar. Push the S58 past 800hp. The stock turbos are efficient up to ~680hp.
  • Ethanol Fuelling / Flex Fuel — Flex fuel kits allow automatic ethanol content detection. Combined with a custom tune, this unlocks the S58's full potential on pump gas or ethanol.
  • xHP / DCT Tune — ZF 8HP or DCT-equipped S58 cars benefit from transmission tuning for higher torque limits and optimised shift strategy.

Charge Pipe / Boost Pipe

Like all BMW turbo engines, the S58's charge pipes should be upgraded to aluminium before any Stage 1+ tune. The stock plastic pipes are not designed for increased boost pressures.

Oil Consumption (Some Early Cars)

Some early production S58 engines exhibit higher oil consumption than expected. BMW has addressed this in later production runs. We monitor oil levels during tuning and check for underlying issues.

Cooling System Under Track Use

The S58 generates significant heat at high power levels. For track use or sustained spirited driving, an upgraded oil cooler and cooling system are recommended. For street use, the stock cooling is adequate for Stage 1–2.

2023+ S58 models have increased ECU security that may require bench flashing rather than OBD flashing. We have the tooling to handle both methods.

How much power can a stock S58 make with a Stage 1 tune?

A stock-hardware S58 Competition typically makes 600–650hp and 730nm with a Stage 1 ECU remap on 93 octane equivalent. With an E40 ethanol blend, 650–700hp and 800–820nm is achievable — all on stock hardware. This is one of the most responsive engines to tuning ever produced.

Is the S58 safe to tune on stock internals?

Absolutely. The S58's closed-deck aluminium block, forged crankshaft, and robust internals are designed to handle significantly more than factory power. Stock turbos reliably support 650–680hp. The S58 is arguably the safest BMW engine to tune on stock components.

G80 M3 vs G82 M4 vs G87 M2 — any tuning difference?

The S58 engine is fundamentally the same across all models. The G87 M2 has a slightly detuned factory calibration (460hp vs 473/510hp) but reaches the same tuned power levels. Competition models have identical hardware to standard — the difference is purely calibration.

Is MHD compatible with the S58?

Yes. MHD Flasher supports the S58 platform. EuroLab uses MHD as the flashing platform — the vessel that loads our custom-developed calibrations onto your ECU. Our custom tunes are built specifically for NZ 98 RON fuel and conditions.

What about running ethanol on the S58?

The S58's dual injection system (direct + port) handles ethanol blends exceptionally well. E30–E40 blends provide significant power gains (700hp+ on stock turbos). The port injection system makes ethanol mixing straightforward. We offer E85-specific custom dyno tunes.

What's the difference between an OTS tune and a custom dyno tune?

An OTS tune uses pre-calibrated maps developed overseas. A custom dyno tune is developed by EuroLab in-house on our Mainline hub dynamometer — optimised for your specific S58, its modifications, and New Zealand's 98 RON fuel.

How long does an S58 tune take?

Every vehicle starts with a 2-hour health check and diagnostic. An MHD OTS flash then takes approximately 1 hour. A custom dyno tune is a 2–3 day process — baseline pulls, full calibration development on the hub dyno, validation runs, road testing, and final verification.
