The BMW S63B44 is M Division's 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, featuring a hot-vee configuration where the turbochargers sit between the cylinder banks for minimal turbo lag and maximum efficiency. The S63 powers BMW's most powerful production vehicles — the M5, M8, X5M, and X6M.
The S63 has evolved through two major generations: the F1x generation (M5 F10, M6, X5M F85, X6M F86) producing 560–575hp, and the F9x generation (M5 F90, M8, X5M F95, X6M F96) producing 600–625hp. Both generations respond dramatically to ECU tuning.
With a Stage 1 ECU remap, the F9x S63 reliably delivers 680–720hp and 850–900nm — genuine supercar territory. The F1x generation sees similar proportional gains. The S63's robust bottom end and hot-vee turbo layout support 900hp+ with upgraded hardware.

Stage 2 Essentials
- Catless / High-Flow Downpipes — The S63's hot-vee layout means the downpipes are relatively short and close-coupled. High-flow or catless downpipes are the biggest single hardware upgrade — essential for Stage 2.
- Upgraded Intercooler — The stock air-to-water intercooler system is efficient but can be overwhelmed on tuned cars. An upgraded heat exchanger or chargecooler improves consistency.
- Performance Intake / Air Filters — Upgraded intake or high-flow air filters improve airflow to the twin turbochargers.
Stage 2+ & Beyond
- Upgraded Turbos — Hybrid or full-frame turbo upgrades push the S63 to 850–1000hp+. The stock turbos are efficient up to ~780hp.
- Upgraded Fuel System — Larger injectors and upgraded fuel pumps support ethanol fuelling and higher boost levels.
- xHP Transmission Tune — Essential for the ZF 8HP-equipped M5/M8/X5M/X6M. Higher torque limits, faster shifts, and optimised shift strategy for the massive torque these engines produce.

Rod Bearing Wear (F1x)
The F1x-generation S63 (M5 F10, M6) is known for premature rod bearing wear. We recommend proactive rod bearing replacement on F1x cars before tuning — this is standard M5/M6 ownership maintenance. F9x cars have improved bearing clearances.

Oil Leaks (Valley Pan / Turbo Lines)
The S63's hot-vee configuration means oil leaks from the valley pan gasket, turbo oil feed/return lines, or valve cover gaskets can be difficult to spot. We check thoroughly during pre-tune diagnostics.

With 600+ hp generating significant heat, the cooling system works hard. We check coolant hoses, expansion tank, and thermostat function. For track use, an upgraded cooling system is recommended.

The stock catalytic converters are very restrictive on the S63, especially on F1x cars. They are often the first hardware upgrade — essential for unlocking Stage 2 power.

How much power can a stock S63 make with a Stage 1 tune?
An F9x-generation S63 (M5 F90, M8) typically makes 700–720hp and 850–900nm with a Stage 1 ECU remap. The earlier F1x generation (M5 F10, M6) sees 650–680hp and 850–870nm. Both are massive gains from software alone.
F1x vs F9x S63 — what's different?
The F9x S63 (2017+) has revised turbochargers, updated engine management, and improved cooling. It makes more power from factory (600hp vs 560hp) and responds even better to tuning. Both generations share the same fundamental architecture.
Is the S63 safe to tune on stock internals?
Yes — the S63 has a very robust bottom end with a forged crankshaft and strong main caps. Stage 1 and Stage 2 are well within the engine's capabilities. For F1x cars, we recommend addressing rod bearings first (known weak point). F9x cars are more robust in this area.
What's the difference between an OTS tune and a custom dyno tune?
An OTS tune uses pre-calibrated maps developed overseas. A custom dyno tune is developed by EuroLab in-house on our Mainline hub dynamometer — optimised for your specific S63, its modifications, and New Zealand's 98 RON fuel.
Can I run E85 on the S63?
The S63 responds very well to ethanol blends. E30–E40 blends provide significant power gains. Full E85 requires upgraded fuel system components (pumps, lines). We offer ethanol-specific custom dyno tunes.
How long does an S63 tune take?
Every vehicle starts with a 2-hour health check and diagnostic. A custom dyno tune is a 2–3 day process — baseline pulls, full calibration development on the hub dyno, validation runs, road testing, and final verification.
