Every tuning shop in New Zealand will tell you how much power they can get out of your car. Not a single one will tell you how much life they’re taking out of it.
The tuning industry has a dirty little secret, and it’s one that keeps workshops busy and customers paying. More power means more wear. More boost means shorter component life. More timing means more stress on parts that were engineered for specific tolerances. This is physics, not opinion.
I’m going to tell you what no other shop will. Not because I don’t tune cars. I do, and I’m good at it. But because you deserve to know exactly what you’re signing up for before you hand over your money.
The Power Chase
Walk into any performance shop and you’ll hear the same pitch. “My tune makes more power.” “We got 400hp out of a stock turbo.” “Our Stage 2 makes 50hp more than the other guys.” It’s a competition between shops, and your car is the battleground.
Every shop wants to be the one posting the biggest dyno number on social media. The bigger the number, the more customers walk through the door. It’s great marketing. It’s terrible engineering.
Here’s what nobody puts on the Instagram post: what happened to that engine 30,000 kms later.
The Hidden Cost of Horsepower
Every component in your engine was designed by engineers who spent years testing it. The turbo, the valvetrain, the bearings, the seals, the gaskets, the transmission. Every single part was designed to handle a specific load, a specific temperature range, a specific duty cycle.
When you tune a car, you’re asking every one of those components to work harder than they were designed to. Some handle it fine. Some don’t. But every single one wears faster.
A stock turbo on a modern European engine might last 200,000 to 250,000 kms. That’s the lifespan the manufacturer engineered for. Tune that engine from day one, even a conservative Stage 1 map, and you could shorten that turbo’s life by 50,000 kms. Go Stage 2 with more boost and more aggressive timing, and it gets worse.
Some tuners will tell you “my tune is reliable.” And it could be. Some will say “my tune won’t cause damage.” Sometimes that’s true. But not a single one will tell you “my tune will shorten the life of your car.” Because that’s the one truth that kills the sale.
What We’ve Seen Come Through the Door
This isn’t theory. This is what rolls into our workshop on the back of a tow truck.
VAG 2.0 TFSI and 2.5 TFSI
These are some of the most popular engines for tuning in New Zealand. The EA888 and the five-cylinder are fantastic platforms, and serious power can be achieved from them. The forums are full of people running 400, 500, even 600hp builds.
What the forums don’t show you is the aftermath. We’ve seen camshafts and cam lobes completely destroyed at 70,000 kms on tuned 2.0 TFSIs and 2.5 TFSI DAZA engines. These are parts that should last the life of the engine on a stock car. Turbos blown as fast as 20,000 kms after the tune was installed. Valve lifters cracked. Valve retainers broken. Connecting rod bearings worn to nothing.
70,000 kms. That’s three years of normal driving. The engine is barely broken in on a stock car, and these tuned ones are getting torn down for major repairs.
BMW S55 (M3/M4)
The S55 twin-turbo straight six is an incredible engine. It responds brilliantly to tuning. It also has a well-documented crank hub issue that gets dramatically worse with increased power.
The crank hub is a press-fit connection between the crankshaft and the timing gear. More power means more rotational force on that connection. When it slips, timing jumps, and you’re looking at bent valves, damaged pistons, and a repair bill that starts at $5,000 and climbs from there. Camshaft misalignment faults, VANOS issues, all of these get accelerated when you push more power through the drivetrain.
These are real faults that cost thousands of dollars to repair. Every single one of them was accelerated by tuning.
The Business Model Nobody Talks About
Here’s the part that should make you uncomfortable.
A workshop tunes your car. You pay them for the power upgrade. You drive away happy with your new numbers. Six months, twelve months, maybe two years later, something breaks. You bring the car back. They fix it. You pay them again.
You paid them to create the problem, and then you paid them to fix it.
I’m not saying every shop does this deliberately. Most genuinely believe their tunes are safe. But the incentive structure is undeniable. The more aggressive the tune, the sooner something fails, the sooner you’re back in the workshop. It’s a cycle that benefits the shop and costs you.
Push max horsepower. Collect the tuning fee. Wait for the inevitable failure. Collect the repair fee. Repeat.
That’s the break-fix cycle, and it’s the dirtiest open secret in the performance industry.
Your Gearbox Didn’t Sign Up For This Either
Everyone talks about engine tuning. Nobody talks about what that extra power does to the transmission sitting behind it.
Whether your gearbox has been “tuned” or not, increased engine power means increased torque through the drivetrain. Every gear change, every launch, every pull in third gear is now putting more force through components that were designed for stock power levels.
Clutch packs wear faster. Valve bodies work harder. Bearings take more load. Syncros in manual boxes take more punishment. This isn’t opinion. This is mechanical engineering. More force equals more wear. Full stop.
And when a modern European transmission fails? You’re not looking at a few hundred dollars. A ZF 8HP rebuild starts around $4,000. A DSG replacement can be $6,000 or more. A Porsche PDK? Don’t even ask.
The Servicing Problem
Modern manufacturers have been stretching service intervals to ridiculous lengths. Some cars come from the factory with 20,000 km oil change intervals. Some are 32,000 kms. That’s absurd. Absolutely absurd.
Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates, it cools, it cleans, it protects. And it degrades with every kilometre. The longer you leave it, the less protection you have.
As I always say: oil is a lot cheaper than an engine.
What the service intervals should actually be:

These aren’t arbitrary numbers. Ethanol and methanol wash past piston rings and dilute oil faster. More boost means higher combustion temperatures which break oil down faster. If you’re running a tuned car on extended factory intervals, you’re gambling with the most expensive component in your vehicle.
Transmission Fluid: There’s No Such Thing as “Lifetime”
“Lifetime fill.” Two words that have destroyed more transmissions than any tune ever has.
Manufacturers call their transmission fluid “lifetime” because it sounds like you never have to change it. What they actually mean is that the fluid will last the “lifetime” of the transmission under warranty. After that, it’s your problem.
Transmission fluid breaks down. It gets contaminated with clutch material, metal particles, and heat. The harder the transmission works, the faster the fluid degrades. If you’ve added power to the engine, the transmission is working harder whether you tuned the gearbox or not.

These are the intervals for stock cars. If you’re tuned, shorten them. If your transmission starts slipping, shuddering, or making noises it didn’t before, the fluid change is already overdue.
The EGR and DPF Delete: Laziness Disguised as Tuning
Here’s another one that drives me up the wall.
Customer comes in with an EGR fault or a DPF warning light. The “performance shop” down the road tells them the fix is simple: tune it out. Delete the EGR. Remove the DPF. Remap the ECU to pretend those systems never existed. Problem solved, right?
Wrong. The problem isn’t solved. It’s hidden.
Nine times out of ten, the shop offering to delete your EGR or DPF is doing it because they don’t know how to diagnose or repair the actual fault. A clogged DPF is a symptom, not the disease. It could be a faulty injector, a failed pressure sensor, a boost leak, a dozen different root causes. Fixing the actual issue is often cheaper than paying for a DPF removal and a custom tune to go with it.
But diagnosing the real problem takes skill, equipment, and time. Plugging in a laptop and ticking “delete DPF” takes ten minutes. Guess which one the lazy shop offers you.
And now you’re driving around with no particulate filter, with the actual underlying fault still there slowly causing damage you can’t see. That’s not tuning. That’s incompetence with a price tag.
AdBlue systems are the same story. Yes, AdBlue repairs are expensive, and I understand why people want to delete them. The AdBlue tank is a self-contained unit with a pump, heater, and filters built in. None of those components are individually serviceable, so when something fails, it’s usually an entire unit replacement. That’s a big bill.
But most of the time, the shop offering the delete can’t actually diagnose why the system failed in the first place. A faulty NOx sensor, a crystallised injector, a simple software calibration. Fix the root cause and the system works as designed. The AdBlue system is independent, so a delete won’t cause further mechanical issues. But you’re still paying for a delete and retune when the actual fix might have been simpler and cheaper.
A Real Example
A customer came to us with an X5 F15 30D wanting a tune. These engines are torque monsters and you can get immense power out of them, so we understood the appeal. But the vehicle had done 190,000 kms.
We immediately advised him of a potential stretching timing chain, because these fail above 200,000 kms. We also pointed out that tuning an engine with that kind of mileage isn’t a great idea. Components are worn, tolerances have shifted, and adding power just accelerates the timeline to failure.
The owner also wanted to delete the DPF. Again, we advised against it. There was no fault with the vehicle. Why spend money fixing something that isn’t broken?
Once the customer had the full picture, he agreed it wasn’t worth it. Some people might think turning away work is bad for business. We think it’s honest. It keeps the customer safe and the vehicle alive for longer. And that customer will come back when he actually needs something done.
So Should You Tune Your Car?
Yes. If you want to.
This article isn’t anti-tuning. I tune cars for a living. I love what a well-calibrated ECU remap can do to a European engine. The throttle response, the mid-range torque, the way the car comes alive. It’s brilliant.
But you need to go in with your eyes open.
If you understand that more power means more wear, that service intervals need to come down, that components will have shorter lifespans, and that the transmission needs attention too, then absolutely, go for it. Enjoy the performance. That’s what these cars were built for.
The problem is when nobody tells you any of this. When a shop takes your money, cranks the boost, posts the dyno sheet, and sends you on your way without a single word about what comes next. That’s not tuning. That’s selling you a time bomb and letting you think it’s a gift.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Stage 1 tune damage my engine?
A conservative Stage 1 tune from a reputable calibrator is unlikely to cause immediate damage. But it will increase wear on components like turbochargers, valvetrain, and bearings over time. You should expect shortened service intervals and plan for components to need attention sooner than on a stock car.
How much does tuning shorten the life of a turbo?
A stock turbo on a modern European engine can last 200,000 to 250,000 kms. A Stage 1 tune might reduce that by 50,000 kms or more. Stage 2 with increased boost pressure will reduce it further. The exact impact depends on the tune, the tuner, driving style, and how well the car is maintained.
Is “lifetime” transmission fluid really lifetime?
No. “Lifetime” means the fluid will last through the manufacturer’s warranty period. Transmission fluid degrades with heat, contamination, and use. VAG DSG transmissions should be serviced every 60,000 kms, ZF units (BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover) every 80,000 kms, and Mercedes automatics every 60,000 kms.
How often should I change oil on a tuned car?
Every 7,000 to 8,000 kms for a tuned engine. If you’re running ethanol or methanol injection, drop that to 4,000 to 5,000 kms. Stock engines should be at 10,000 kms or 12 months regardless of what the manufacturer says.
Should I delete my EGR or DPF instead of repairing it?
No. A clogged DPF or faulty EGR is usually a symptom of an underlying issue like a failed injector, sensor fault, or boost leak. Fixing the root cause is often cheaper than a delete and retune, and it keeps your car road legal and WOF compliant. Shops that jump straight to “delete it” usually can’t diagnose the real problem.
Can tuning void my warranty?
Yes. Under New Zealand’s Consumer Guarantees Act, a manufacturer must prove the modification caused the specific failure to deny a warranty claim. In practice, modern dealer diagnostic tools can detect ECU modifications, and most dealers will flag any tune as a reason to deny powertrain warranty claims. Even if the law is on your side, fighting it is expensive and time-consuming.
