Often Overlooked, a transmission service ensures the longevity of the gearbox and prevents expensive gearbox repairs.

Unfortunately, about 70% of inquires regarding transmission service are related to faults, due to lack of maintenance. The usual concern is erratic shifts, slipping gearbox, refusal to shift up or down, and/or transmission error light. At this point, it is too late, the damage is already done, a transmission oil service would NOT repair damaged parts nor it will reverse time.

A transmission service is done as a preventative measure to protect your gearbox from the issues above, keeping shifts smooth, temperatures cool, and the mechanism well lubricated.

When performing a transmission service, it is absolutely crucial that genuine manufacturer oils are used. The use of non-genuine fluids will damage the transmission and lead to expensive repairs.

Now some vehicle manufacturers claim that their transmissions have "lifetime oil" (Including BMW) they even place a sticker on the oil pan stating that it's "lifetime fluid, no oil change/top-off necessary".

We are not sure what they mean by that statement, however, ZF, the manufacturer of these transmissions which are supplied to BMW stipulates that a service is required at 150,000km, now if the vehicle has a performance tune, or is being driven aggressively, this service interval would be shortened. We would suggest servicing a ZF transmission every 80,000KM.
